“Gynecomastia” is the medical term for excess skin or soft tissue of the male chest. In mild cases it can make a person self-conscious, and in more severe cases it can lead to difficulty in wearing clothing or skin breakdown from chronic moisture. There are a number of different possible causes for this (it is important to rule out reversible causes before proceeding with male chest surgery), but most often it is due to a person’s body type or the result of significant weight loss. The goal of male chest surgery is to remove the extra soft tissue, and possibly skin, to improve the contour of the male chest while minimizing scarring and maintaining the nipple in the proper position. What to expect: During the office consultation you will discuss all aspects of the procedure with your surgeon in order to establish a thorough and well-informed plan. Your procedure will begin after consulting with your surgeon and your anesthesiologist or anesthetist about the anesthesia that is safest for you. These procedures are most often done on an outpatient basis, meaning you can go home after the male chest surgery is done.

The recovery: You will have some bruising and swelling that typically improves over several weeks. Your postoperative course is monitored by your surgeon and the staff. Local anesthetic and pain medication are often used to manage any discomfort you might have after the operation. We will provide you with some light pressure garments to help support the area after surgery. If surgical drains are necessary, our staff will help teach you about managing them.

Some of the unlikely complications: Infections, fluid collections, or a hematoma (blood collection) can occur, and may require surgical drainage.
